Background

Where is Palm oil produced?

  • The oil palm tree grows in equatorial regions. It’s a tropical tree with 5-meter-long leaves. The fruits are harvested when the oil palm trees are three to four years old.
  • Originally found in West Africa, the oil palm tree is now primarily grown in Indonesia and Malaysia, the world’s two largest producers of palm oil.
  • Other countries, besides Indonesia and Malaysia, are increasing their production of palm oil, including South and Central America, Thailand, and Western Africa.

Speciality of Palm Oil

  • In terms of land use, the oil palm tree is the most efficient oil crop. When compared to other oil crops, it has the highest yield per hectare of land.
  • It requires less than half the land required by other crops to produce the same amount of oil (such as sunflower, soybean, or rapeseed oil).
